Google Business Profile Mistakes That Are Costing You Customers

By Mike Miller, founder of Local Lift - Media & Marketing

For most local businesses, your Google Business Profile gets seen by more potential customers than your website does. When someone searches 'plumber near me' or 'best breakfast in Dacula,' the map pack shows up before any website — and your profile is your storefront window.

I audit profiles for businesses across Gwinnett County and the CSRA, and the same handful of mistakes show up constantly. Here's what they are and how to fix them this week.

    1. Wrong or stale hours

Nothing kills trust faster than a customer driving to a 'Open now' business that's dark. Update your hours — including holiday hours — religiously. Google even prompts you before most holidays. Ten seconds of maintenance, or a one-star review from someone standing in your empty parking lot. Your choice.

    2. No photos, or photos from five years ago

Profiles with fresh, real photos get dramatically more calls and direction requests than bare ones — and customers can tell the difference between your actual team and stock imagery. Add photos monthly: your work, your space, your people. It signals an active business to both Google and customers.

    3. Ignoring the Q&A section

Anyone can ask — and answer — questions on your profile. If you're not watching it, strangers are answering questions about your business, sometimes wrong. Seed it yourself: post and answer the ten questions customers actually ask you. It's free, permanent sales copy.

    4. A primary category that's almost right

Your primary category is one of the biggest ranking factors in local search, and 'close enough' isn't. 'Contractor' and 'Roofing contractor' compete in different races. Check what categories the businesses ranking above you use, and make sure yours matches what you actually want to be found for.

    5. Reviews with no responses

Responding to reviews isn't just courtesy — it's a ranking and conversion signal. Respond to every review, good or bad, within a couple of days. Thank the happy ones by name, and handle the unhappy ones calmly and specifically. Future customers read your responses more carefully than the reviews themselves.

    6. Never posting updates

Google Posts — the little updates on your profile — are the most ignored free feature in local marketing. A weekly post about a special, a project, or a tip keeps your profile looking alive and gives you more room to show up in search. Fifteen minutes a week.

    The honest truth

None of this is hard. It's just consistent — and consistency is where most businesses fall off. If you'd rather hand the whole thing to someone who does it for a living, Google Business Profile management is one of the core services at Local Lift - Media & Marketing.
